Potential of VIS-NIR-SWIR Spectroscopy from the Chinese Soil Spectral Library for Assessment of Nitrogen Fertilization Rates in the Paddy-Rice Region, China

چکیده
To meet growing food demand with limited land and reduced environmental impact, soil testing and formulated fertilization methods have been widely adopted around the world. However, conventional technology for investigating nitrogen fertilization rates (NFR) is time consuming and expensive. Here, we evaluated the use of visible near-infrared shortwave-infrared (VIS-NIR-SWIR: 400–2500 nm) spectroscopy for the assessment of NFR to provide necessary information for fast, cost-effective and precise fertilization rating. Over 2000 samples were collected from paddy-rice fields in 10 Chinese provinces; samples were added to the Chinese Soil Spectral Library (CSSL). Two kinds of modeling strategies for NFR, quantitative estimation of soil N prior to classification and qualitative by classification, were employed using partial least squares regression (PLSR), locally weighted regression (LWR), and support vector machine discriminant analogy (SVMDA). Overall, both LWR and SVMDA had moderate accuracies with Cohen’s kappa coefficients of 0.47 and 0.48, respectively, while PLSR had fair accuracy (0.37). We conclude that VIS-NIR-SWIR spectroscopy coupled with the CSSL appears to be a viable, rapid means for the assessment of NFR in paddy-rice soil. Based on qualitative classification of soil spectral data only, it is recommended that the SVMDA be adopted for rapid implementation. OPEN ACCESS Remote Sens. 2015, 7 7030

In situ measurements with visible and near-infrared spectroscopy (vis-NIR) provide an efficient way for acquiring soil information of paddy soils in the short time gap between the harvest and following rotation. The aim of this study was to evaluate its feasibility to predict a series of soil properties including organic matter (OM), organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen (TN), available nitrogen ...
متن کاملDetermination of Leaf Relative Water Content of Two Genotypes of Sesame Using Visible and Near- Infrared (VIS/NIR) Spectrometry to Detect Drought Stress
Relative water content (RWC) in plants is one of the most important biochemical parameters and its deficiency limits efficiency of photosynthesis and crop productivity. The scientific reports on using spectroscopy in detecting drought stress for sesame plants are very rare. In this study, the possibility of identifying water stress in two sensitive (Naz-Takshakhe) and resistant (Yekta) genotype...
متن کاملHyperspectral reflectance sensing to assess the growth and photosynthetic properties of wheat cultivars exposed to different irrigation rates in an irrigated arid region
Simultaneous indirect assessment of multiple and diverse plant parameters in an exact and expeditious manner is becoming imperative in irrigated arid regions, with a view toward creating drought-tolerant genotypes or for the management of precision irrigation. This study aimed to evaluate whether spectral reflectance indices (SRIs) in three parts of the electromagnetic spectrum ((visible-infrar...
متن کاملDocumenting production process and the ranking factors causing yield gap in rice fields in Sari, Iran
The documentation process is very important for identifying yield constraint factors and yield gap. For this purpose, all managing practices were recorded by monitoring of paddy rice fields in Sari region, Iran from 2015 to 2016. Field identifications were undertaken in such a way that they included all the main production procedures with variations in management viewpoints. The results reveale...
متن کاملEffect of long-term application of manure and mineral fertilizers on nitrogen mineralization and microbial biomass in paddy soil during rice growth stages
Net N mineralization rate (NMR), net N consumption rate (NCR), microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and nitrogen (MBN), potentially mineralizable N (PMN) and mineral N (N-NH4 + and N-NO3 –) were measured in paddy soil at five growth stages of rice to determine the effect of long-term fertilization in subtropical China. The studied long-term treatments included CK (no fertilization), N, NP, NPK and NP...
